[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s a widely known fact that infertility is on the rise in our present society and it is so common that one in seven couples trying to have a baby will experience difficulty in conceiving spontaneously. This trend is expected to increase in the future and by 2025, around 30 million couples are predicted to grapple with infertility problems in our country. Infertility treatment depends on certain factors like what’s causing the infertility, how long the couple has been infertile, the age of the couple and other personal preferences. A thorough assessment of general health, ovarian function, uterus, fallopian tubes and hormonal balance is needed before starting any fertility treatment.
Infertility treatment involves significant financial, physical, psychological and time commitments. Many patients believe that IVF is the only available treatment option for infertility however; this may not be the case. There are often less invasive, low cost fertility treatment options available for both men and women that give couples a good chance of success.
Medical treatment of a hormonal imbalance or correction of a metabolic disturbance can improve reproductive function. Detection and treatment of thyroid disease and high prolactin levels can restore normal reproductive function for some women. Screening for and correcting metabolic abnormalities like insulin resistance can also improve reproductive and overall health. Surgical removal of fibroids and polyps from inside the uterine cavity can also increase the chance of pregnancy in some cases .
Ovulation problems affect up to 20% of women who are having trouble getting pregnant. Ovulation induction treatments cost a fraction of IVF treatments and can achieve pregnancy rates close to those of fertile couples.
Some women need only one or two therapies to improve fertility. Other women may need several different types of treatment to achieve pregnancy. Fertility drugs are the main treatment for women who are infertile due to ovulation disorders. Intrauterine insemination can be used to place healthy sperm directly in the uterus around the time the ovary releases one or more eggs to be fertilized. Uterine problems such as endometrial polyps, a uterine septum, intrauterine scar tissue and some fibroids can be treated with hysteroscopic or laparoscopic surgery.
Men should also complete a semen analysis early on to evaluate any problems with sperm production or function.
Men’s treatment for general sexual problems or lack of healthy sperm may include changing lifestyle factors like discontinuing select medications, reducing or eliminating harmful substances, improving frequency and timing of intercourse, exercising regularly, and optimizing other factors that may otherwise impair fertility. Certain medications that improve sperm count and enhance testicular function can be recommended for men. For some conditions, surgery can correct sperm blockage and restore fertility. Sperm retrieval techniques can help to obtain sperm when ejaculation is a problem.
In cases where all of these treatments fail, couples can often still achieve a pregnancy through use of assisted reproductive technology. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common ART technique. Some of the techniques used in IVF could include Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, assisted hatching, donor eggs or sperm, gestational carrier.
